Our Leadership Team

Stephen Pywell 

Appointed CEO of Benthic in 2012, Steve has more than 30 years’ experience in the global oil and gas industry, including extensive experience in subsea and deepwater developments. He has held senior positions with Brown & Root Energy Services, Rockwater, ABB Floating Production Systems and Wellstream International.


Greg Fyffe MBA BE (Hons)
VP Strategic Growth

With 15 years in roles spanning the oil industry supply chain, Greg combines extensive field experience with a highly developed understanding of the financial complexities of managing large scale oil and gas developments.

As a Corporate Planning Analyst with Roc Oil, a mid-cap Australian independent, he played a central role in capital raisings, new ventures and acquisitions, crude marketing, and oilfield development.


Steven Stuart MBA BE Civil
General Manager - Asia Pacific

Steve joined the leadership team as Corporate Development Manager in December 2005 after a long association with Benthic, including fund raising and business planning. Steve was appointed General Manager - Asia Pacific in November 2013. His experience includes business and financial consulting, capital raising and engineering project management. Before joining Benthic, he worked as an investment banker in major international finance houses. He started his career as a project engineer in infrastructure and development projects. 


Violet Simmons
Finance Director

Violet Simmons serves as the Finance Director for Benthic. She has over 25 years of financial and managerial experience in the oil and gas industry.

Chris Braithwaite
Board Member

Chris Braithwaite has a 30-year career in project management, engineering and manufacturing businesses include international experience in the service sector of the oil and gas industry, working from bases in Europe, the USA, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, the Former Soviet Union, Brazil and West Africa. He has extensive experience creating and implementing innovative growth strategies and has led global businesses ranging from 50 to 2,000 people. 


Russell Staley BSC (Hons) 

Russell has almost 40 years of experience in the global oil and gas business. Graduating in 1974, from the University of Leeds (UK) in Civil Engineering, Russell emigrated to Australia in the same year to take up a teaching fellowship at the University of NSW where he carried out postgraduate studies in reinforced concrete. 

In 1979, he joined engineering services company WorleyParsons, where he held various leadership positions, culminating in his appointment as Executive Director responsible for global oil and gas in 2000. From 1979 to 2002, WorleyParsons grew from revenues of $1 million to $500 million, listing on the Australian Stock Exchange in November 2000.  Over that time, Russell was one of the key players in Worley's strategic growth. One of Russell's key areas of interest has been in offshore foundation engineering, with responsibility for projects in Australia, south-east Asia and the Middle East.


Geoff Ainsworth BA (Hons) MA, Dip Fin Mgt 

Geoff is a Sydney based businessman with a portfolio of investments in early stage companies. He is a director of a number of personally owned companies, an alternate Director of Zork Pty Ltd and a past Director and Group General Manager of Aristocrat Leisure Ltd. Geoff is a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW and its Foundation, a director of the Bundanon Trust and a member of the Council of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Geoff is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.


Gerard Hutchinson BEc, MBA, MBL 
Non-Executive Independent Director
Chairman of the Audit Committee

As well as his role at Benthic, Gerard is the Group Manager, Corporate Development for AGC/Ausgroup. He brings a combination of Board (FAICD) and Executive (FAIM) experience in both the construction and engineering industries over the last 20 years. This includes responsibility for a diverse portfolio of autonomous multinational operations, from start-ups to market leaders, including organizations with substantial revenues and large numbers of employees working both in Australian and Asian operating environments and cultures.
